If your car air conditioning has gone from ice cold to lukewarm, it is rarely a mystery. Car air con is a sealed system, so it does not use up refrigerant in normal service. If the air is no longer cold, the refrigerant has either escaped through a leak, or something has stopped the system circulating it properly.

1. Refrigerant loss through a leaking condenser

This is the single most common cause. The condenser sits at the front of the car behind the grille, where it is hit by stones, road grit and winter salt. Once the thin aluminium develops a pinhole or corroded joint, refrigerant escapes slowly. The classic symptom is air con that is cold for a few weeks after a re-gas and then fades back to ambient air.

Look for oily residue, a greasy film, or greenish UV dye traces around the condenser fins, and for visible corrosion or impact damage on the front-mounted core.

2. Leaks elsewhere in the system

Pipes, hoses, the compressor shaft seal, the evaporator and the O-ring joints can all leak. These are less common than condenser leaks but they do happen, which is exactly why a proper leak test matters before any part is bought or fitted.

3. Compressor failure

The compressor pumps refrigerant around the system. If it seizes, loses its clutch, or has been run dry after a long period with no gas, you will get no cooling at all. A loud rattle, a squeal, or a clutch that never engages when air con is switched on all point this way.

4. Blocked condenser or cooling fan fault

The condenser has to shed heat through airflow. If the fins are packed with leaves, insects and mud, or if the cooling fan is not running, the system cannot dump heat at low speed. The tell-tale sign is air con that is cold on the motorway but goes warm in slow traffic.

5. Electrical and control faults

Pressure switches, relays, fuses, the climate control module and blend-flap actuators can all stop the system cooling even when the refrigerant charge is correct. If the compressor never engages and the gas pressure is normal, the fault is usually electrical.

6. Cabin filter and airflow problems

If the air feels cool but weak, the cabin filter may be blocked or the blower motor failing. This affects airflow rather than temperature, but people often describe it as poor air con.
